Obituary of Catherine V. Nackenoff

Catherine V. Nackenoff, born Catherine Virginia White, died on December 12th at 106 years of age. Catherine, born in Monterey on July 7, 1908, was the second child of Isaac Harmon White and Hattie (Varner) White, and grew up with brothers Marlyn and Jim and Sister Pauline (Eagle) on their farm on the Rich Hills Road. After graduating from Monterey High School, Catherine attended business school in Richmond but decided she wanted to become a nurse. She moved to Washington, D.C. and was awarded her RN after completing a three year program run by G.W. University. Her work included private duty nursing, and she continued until she married Jacob (Jack) Nackenoff, a patent lawyer for the government, in 1943. They moved to Arlington, Virginia, where Catherine lived for 50 years. She was an active member of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and of the Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. After Jack died, she moved at age 90 to Media, Pennsylvania to be near Carol, her only child, who teaches at Swarthmore College. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Carol Nackenoff and son-in-law Jim Greer from Swarthmore, PA., and grandson Alexander Nackenoff, who currently lives in Nashville, Tn. She is also survived by her niece, Rebecca (White) Philpotts of Richmond Va. and nephew James R. White of Athens, Tn. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in her memory may donate to the Steinway Fund, Granite Farms Estates to support musical programming for the residents. No flowers please.
