Obituary of Anna E. Jones
1930-2016
Anna Elizabeth Jones, age 85, passed away quietly at home surrounded by family and beloved dogs Mitzi and Mandy on Saturday, February 6, 2016. Anna joins her beloved husband Calvin (Sonny) who went to be with the Lord in October 2015. Born in Garden City, Pennsylvania to Robert and Anna Bentley, Anna was one of seven children who grew up in the house her father built. She graduated from Nether Providence High School, Wallingford PA, as class Valedictorian. As a young girl, Anna loved taking care of people, especially the elderly. She decided to make nursing her profession, graduating from Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA as a diploma trained Registered Nurse. Sonny and Anna, met at the Church of God in Brookhaven, PA as teenagers and committed to a life together. They followed God’s plan in marriage, soon nurtured their children in the truth of God’s Word, the teachings of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit. The family outgrew their small home in Chester, and moved to the neighboring Borough of Rutledge. Over the next twenty plus years, Anna worked at senior care facilities including Fair Acres in Lima, and the Adult Day Care Center in Lansdowne. She also owned and operated Ann’s Placement Services which managed and staffed private duty nursing services throughout Delaware County.
During those years, Anna, Sonny, and the family operated a small deli, Jones’ Market in Oak Orchard, DE. Anna was very active in the music ministry at Oak Orchard Community Church and had quite a positive influence in the lives of local youth. Sonny and Anna eventually settled in their ranch home, fondly named “Country Acres” in Townsend, DE. Anna’s love of nature and skill at gardening soon transformed the landscape into a showcase of roses, flowering trees, ivy, and a hummingbird haven. Anna also loved music, regularly sang, and played piano for many of the local churches. She felt honored to give piano lessons in her home to many of the local children and hosted annual recitals to highlight her students’ talent. Anna was passionate about writing poetry, especially on the blessings of nature surrounding her home. Her talent was recognized by The National Library of Poetry where her poems were published. Anna was also very active in both the M.O.T Garden Club and Middletown, DE Annual Peach Festival. Sonny and Anna loved to travel, taking both land trips and numerous cruises. Some of their destinations included; Ireland, Wales, Iceland, Hawaii, the tiny Island of Kiribati, Alaska, and the continental U.S. Even with all their traveling, Anna especially enjoyed time spent at the mobile home she shared with Sonny in Pot Nets Park, Millsboro, DE.
Anna is survived by her six children; Donna Etzweiler and husband Tom, Daron and wife Ruth, Dennis and wife Gayle, David, Diane, Dawn Beckham and husband Ken, 13 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, as well as her dear dogs, Mandy and Mitzi. She was predeceased by her brother Bert and sister Matilda. She is survived by siblings: Florence Anderson, Robert Bentley, Ada Bentley, and Mary Esther Josher.
