Condolences
Sorry for you and your family loss, your father will be greatly missed by one and all.
Dear Sandy,
I am so very sorry to hear of John's passing. His kindness and gentleness were apparent in all that he did. A lifetime of 53 years must involve so many wonderful memories that will live on through you. He will be greatly missed by so many people whose lives he has touched. Please accept my apology for being unable to attend the services. A combination of severe sinus infection and back pain prevented my attendance.
Not only did I work with John but I also worked with Mike at East. It's amazing how John will live on through the actions and gentleness of Mike. Just looking at your children proves a lifetime well spent, a lifetime of love. It was truly my pleasure to know a person of John's integrity.
Sincerely,
Vicki Magro Croul
I am truly sorry to hear the sad news. My condolences go out to both you and your family. He was a well respected man by so many people, especially in Brookhaven. May your memories help you cope with this difficult time. Jan Downie
Mr. Monaghan was my middle school principal, but he was much more. He was a man who had a kind word for every student, and one could see in his eyes that he loved his job. He conducted himself with a caring heart rather than an iron fist, but people respected him so much that few challenged him. Mr. Monaghan led by example, and as a result, he became a role model for so many. Thank you for being a positive person in my young life, Mr. Monaghan.
Hello
I met John when I was a member of the Chester YMCA about 1960. I next encountered John as my teacher at Brookhaven Junior High in the school's first year I believe to be 63/64. He had a new 1963 Ford Falcon .......a tan station wagon.(don't ask me how I remember the car...I have no idea what I did yesterday)
Our next encounter was about 15 or 20 years ago when he was principle of Pennell Elementary School. I had two nephews enrolled there. He told them to tell me "hi" and that he would enjoy seeing me. I stopped by late one afternoon totally unannounced. We had a most cordial visit in his office for at least half an hour. We gave each other a brief rundown of our lives. It seems like yesterday.
Although there were large gaps in our time together I will forever consider John a fine person and friend of mine.
He is in my prayers.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr. Monaghan was a very special man. He helped so many children at Pennell elementary school. I got to know him when my daughter went to school. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers!!
Peace. May you find comfort knowing he is at peace.
I had him as a teacher in Junior (Middle school) High; my older son had him as an assistant principal; my younger son had him as a principal. I remember an enthusiastic, young teacher. I loved his saddle shoes. I remember he paid for, from his own pocket, a book that was required reading, for students that couldn't afford to buy the book. He will be missed. Condolences and prayers to his family. Mr. Monaghan, you were the best.
Mr. Monaghan was my principal @ Northley Junior HIgh. He was a great principal. He was a terrific principal. He was always there for all the students no matter what they needed. He will definitely be missed. Now he can educate all those that have gone before him. Know that he is now an angel of God & will always be with you.
Mary Ann and I are very saddened to hear about John's passing away. It has been many, many years since we've seen each other or been in touch, but I remember well our early days in Toby Farms, and even before that when, as kids, we lived in Eyre Park. Our sympathies go out to you, Sandy, and all in your family. You and John will be in my prayers; may you be blessed in abundance in this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Ned Kessler
Dear Sandy & family, we are so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a kind and considerate person, a good listener. May God bless all of you as you grieve. A big hug for Kelly. Love.
My Condolences to your family at this sad time. Mr. Monaghan was my 7th grade teacher at Brookhaven Junior High. I remember him as a caring, dedicated teacher with a great sense of humor. I was in Mr. Monaghan's class when we learned that President Kennedy had been shot. He handled the tragedy with tears in his eyes, and with great dignity. He will be greatly missed.
I was deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Monaghan's passing. He was a true gentleman and a scholar. It was a privilege to work with him at Brookhaven and Northley Middle Schools.
RIP Mr Monaghan the world is a brighter place for you having touched our lives/ To Sandy and the Family -Thank you for sharing your lives with all the former students, it was our privilege. When I remember Mr Monaghan, I capture the vision of him in a bathrobe with a turban towel around his head, in character to teach about an Arab country for Social Studies, to a classroom full of rude Jr High students. Of course his pants were rolled up and his saddle shoes and socks were showing. LOL Anything to facilitate learning. Thank you Mr M -it was an honor to love you My Teacher.
Dear Sandy and family, we were so sorry to hear of Johns passing .Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Chris Possenti and Family.
Our sincere sympathy & prayers are w/the Monaghan Family. John was a very dedicated father, teacher & member of our community, his presence will be missed. Bill & Mary Birkofer, Brookhaven/Naples FL
It is so incredibly sad to hear of the passing of a truly remarkable man. Mr. Monaghan was the best principal ever! Loved this man and he made Pennell a fun school, always taking the time to get to know each and every one of the kids that went there. I remember he loved wearing different ties and would play that joke with you by saying "what's on your shirt?" And you'd look down and he'd get ya every time! Truly an amazing man and great role model! He will definitely be missed!
My sympathies, such a great man who always had an understanding way about him. He was a good part of a lot of people's lives, someone to look up to when we were teenagers. He'll be missed. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
Mr. Monaghan was my 7th grade teacher and what a teacher he was! Went to him with many a small trouble and he advised and listened so well! Was a friend of my parents, Georgia and Robert Sampson(now deceased) at 2nd Presbyterian Church in Aston. Prayers are being sent to his family at the time of this loss.
We are saddened to hear of Mr. Monaghan's passing. He was truly an exceptional person who made everyone feel welcome. He was a wonderful principal through our years in PDSD and then gave me (Amy) my first chance as an elementary teacher at Parkside. I will be forever grateful to him for his high recommendation of me as well as his gentle words of advice. He was one of the finest! To his family, you are in our prayers.
My deepest condolences to his family. He was a kind, gentle soul who devoted his life to children. May God embrace him in his loving arms and send peace to his family. He touched many lives here and will never be forgotten...
John Monahan will always be a special person to our family. When he was principal of Pennell Elementary, I had some problems with my Daughter. John did everything he could possibly do in helping us to help her. He really cared about all of his students and teachers. He was such a blessing to us.
Please accept our sincere condolences on the death of our friend, John, of almost 50 years. He contributed much to the field of education and the students, who he taught and inspired. John appreciate so much the devotion of his wife, Sandy and his family during his illness. May he rest in peace.

Ed and Fran Connolly
Mr.Monaghan was a positive influence to many students.

Mr. Monaghan touched so many lives, including mine. I first met him in 1982 when he was my principal at Brookhaven Middle School and many years later, would touch paths with him again when I taught one of his grandsons. He was an inspiration and a champion of young people. I am keeping your entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

I have so many fond memories of Mr.Monaghan from growing up with him as my principal. He truly cared about all of the students. He always said hi and had a contagious smile. Even when you had to go have a little discussion with him you know he listened and treated everyone fair. He will truly be missed, he touched so many lives and I am thankful that I was able to have him in mine.
Sending hugs to you Kelly.
I attended school at Brookhaven and Northley Middle Schools under Mr. Monaghan. Even at my young age then, I had such respect for him. Never intimidated you, always made you feel like someone special. A true professional and just a wonderful man.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Mr. Monaghan was an amazing principal. I'll never forget him taking me to Friendly's and buying me books in 5th grade. The world lost a great person but heaven just got a little sweeter. Prayers to family, I know he'll be missed.
Thank you for all you have done for Aston children past and present.
