Obituary of William W. Carmichael

William W. Carmichael, 84, Retired banker and loving family man. William W. Carmichael, 84, of Upland, PA, a retired banking executive, died on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Wallingford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his family. Born in Shirley, Ind., he was the youngest child and only son of the late Evert R. and Elizabeth Wright Carmichael. The family moved to Parkside, Delaware County, when he was a child. Mr. Carmichael was a very talented athlete in his youth. He lettered in baseball, basketball and football at Media High School before his graduation in 1947. Following high school, Mr. Carmichael enlisted in the U.S. Army as a member of the 101st Airborne. He soon transferred to the 114th Signal Service Company at the Herzogenaurach (Herzo) Base in Germany. Mr. Carmichael left the Army as a sergeant in June 1952 and began his banking career at home with the Delaware County National Bank, its successor, Southeast National Bank, and then moved to Elmwood Federal Savings and Loan, where he retired as vice president in 1990. Mr. Carmichael was always active in his community. He was a lifetime member of the Parkside Fire Co. and was elected to many terms on the Upland (now Chester Upland) School Board, where he served as president and treasurer. Mr. Carmichael's family was the most important thing in the world to him. He looked on his children and grandchildren and his long marriage with the woman he called "my girl" and "my buddy" as his true successes. One of his greatest joys in his lasts months was visiting with his Great-Grandson Ethan. Mr. Carmichael maintained he didn't want a fuss to be made after his passing, preferring that his obituary stated simply, "He was here and now he isn't." But the impression he left on all he met was so vivid his family felt he deserved more attention. Survivors: His wife of 62 years, Marie (Skorich) Carmichael, a son, W. Russell (Linda) Carmichael of Middletown, two daughters, Judy (Ted) Nevin of Haddon Heights, N.J. and Linda (Michael) Donovan of Pitman, N.J.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson. He was the brother of Doris Thompson of Parkside, PA, Jean Greenhalgh of Upland, PA and the late Mary Alice Green Campbell.
