Obituary of Michael J. Roberts

Michael J. Roberts (September 30, 1954 – August 27, 2024)

Mike Roberts, 69, of Media, PA, died on August 27, 2024. Most people who knew him would agree – he was one of a kind.

A hard-working and honest man of his word, Mike generously gave his time, money or help to family, friends, or anyone who needed it. He always arrived early for all events – and was usually the first one to leave. Together for 38 years, he was caring and loyal to his wife Mary. Nearly every visit with Mike would involve a coffee run to Dunkin.

Mike was born in 1954 in Chester and grew up in Collingdale. He served in the United States Air Force and was employed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for 35 years in a variety of positions, including Rigger and Hazmat Supervisor. He made lifelong friends in all of these places.

Mike loved and was very good at golf, hitting the courses several times a week for over 40 years. He played in several leagues, including “The Misfits” where he was best known as Duke, and in a Navy Shipyard league. He played all year long at Kimberton Golf Club. He’d be there every Sunday, before the sun was barely up, to play the first tee time with a group of childhood friends from Delco. As the group dwindled down over the years, Mike and his die-hard friend, Richard Tracy, could still be found golfing there in the middle of winter. He and Mary’s travel almost always involved a round in a new place, playing on courses in Scotland, Switzerland, Iceland, California, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii and many other places.

Mike is survived by his wife, Mary Walkowiak Roberts, and her children whom he helped raise over their four decades together: Eric (Sarah), Krysta (Bob) and Mark (Vanessa) and their respective children Hannah, Luke, Max, Mary, Alex, Samantha, Jack and Jason, who called him Grandpop. The M&M machine was always full and ready for them. He is also survived by his two brothers Rick and Paul Roberts and many nieces and nephews, including Karen and Michael. He is preceded in death by his father Richard, step-mother Emma and mother Lorraine.

Mike’s diagnosis and experience with Glioblastoma Multiforme was sudden and traumatic, as it is for many families. Our family would like to thank all of those who were involved in his care.

In lieu of flowers, in Mike’s memory please do a random act of kindness or consider a donation to the National Brain Tumor Society to help find new treatments. https://braintumor.org/
