Obituary of Susan M. Haines

 

Susan McLaughlin Haines, age, 77, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Susan was born May 29, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, PA.  She attended Bryn Mawr Elementary School, Penn Valley Elementary School, Welsh Valley Junior High School and graduated Harriton High School in 1964.  In September 1964, she went to Millersville State College (Millersville University) where she meets her future husband Harry J. Haines, 3rd day on campus at a freshman mixer.  Susan married Harry on December 27, 1969 at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.

 

She graduate from Millersville in 1968  with a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Library Science. Received a Master in Education from West Chester University in 1973.

 

Susan taught 4th grade at Lynnewood Elementary School, Haverford School District for 8 years, before leaving to raise her children, Laura Elizabeth and Peter McLaughlin. After 10 years she returned to Lynnewood as the school Librarian, “the best job in the whole world” for the next 20 years.

 

Susan was diagnosed with multiple Sclerosis at the age of 43, in 1989 she continued to lead an active life supporting her children as cub scout and brownie mom, band and orchestra parent. In 2005, she had to finally give in to MS and took disability and retired from teaching.  Probably the worse moment of her life.

 

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Havertown for 50 years she was active as a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school teacher and director, church council member, director of church volunteers and new pastor search committee.

 

Susan moved from Havertown in 2013 to Granite Farms Estate in Media because she could no longer safely use steps. Here in her power wheelchair, she was active in multiple activities; book club, attending classes, and her favorite, socializing at dinner with multiple friends.

 

She is survived by her husband Harry, daughter Laura Coupe, son-in-law Dr. James J. Coupe, granddaughers, Mya, Maggie and Mary. Son Peter, daughter-in-law Michelle (Buckley), grandsons, Chris (Christopher Buccheri), Nathan and granddaughter Ella (Gabriella).

 

Memorial Service will be held on  Sunday, April 14th at 1:00PM at Granite Farms Estates, 1343 West Baltimore Pike Media, PA 19063.
