Mark was one of my earliest students at Swarthmore, and we remained in touch ever since. I never knew anyone with such a positive and enthusiastic approach to life and music. He was a fine, supportive friend, devoted to music as a collective activity in a community of composers, performers, and listeners. His own music is delightfully quirky, often witty, and incredibly varied. His premature passing is a deep loss to all of us who were lucky enough to know him and to music.
