Condolences
I know this is a little late but I just found out about Janet's passing today. I recently retired from the Voorhees Township School District after 47 years. Janet served as our math consultant for the 21 years I served as Director of Curriculum. I always leaned on her and brought her to the district when we needed help and guidance. I have the utmost respect for her and always found her to be an amazing woman. Absolutely awful news. My thought and prayers go out to all of her entire family. RIP Dr. Caldwell.
I first met Dr. Caldwell in January 1992 at then Glassboro State College. She was the teacher, I was the student. The subject - Calculus I. It was may favorite class because she taught it using a hands-on approach that engaged the learners and made math fun. Imagine my surprise, years later, when Dr. Caldwell would be presenting a math workshop for me and my elementary teaching colleagues in our school district. We reconnected immediately, and somehow, she remembered my name. We stayed in touch over the years as we talked about elementary math mathematics. I was honored to have learned from her - on more than 1 occasion. Thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. Her style, beliefs and teaching strategies live on in classrooms all over the world.
There are people who come into your life who enrich it in ways you can never imagine. Janet was first my teacher, who then became a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. Janet changed my way of looking at mathematics in ways that influenced the way I thought about the subject and informed how I taught it. She brought the subject matter to life, highlighting its beauty and elegance. Her eyes would sometimes actually twinkle when she caught a student in an "aha moment". She was one of the most accomplished woman I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Author, gifted teacher to future teachers, mentor to many, proud mother, loving wife, and a good friend --- these were her gifts and she shared them with so many . Her contributions to the discipline of mathematics are many. She leaves a legacy that will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were privileged enough to have known her and been taught by her. My sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers for comfort and strength go out to her husband and children.
